Pacolet Milliken donates 2-acre land for community garden

Pacolet Milliken Enterprises Inc. on Jan. 8 said it recently donated two acres of land in the Judson neighborhood, located two miles west of downtown Greenville, S.C., for the creation of a community garden.

The project, a partnership between the Generous Garden Project, CITY Initiative, and the Judson Community Association, is a focal point of the Judson Community Plan that was approved by Greenville County Council in May 2012.

The town of Judson, built in 1912 as a mill village, still contains a mill operated by Milliken & Co.

Pacolet Milliken owns dozens of surrounding acres that used to hold mill houses and other neighborhood buildings. The site of the donated land, which formerly housed the town laundry, is located near other community hubs including Hollis Academy and YMCA Judson Community Center.

“Pacolet Milliken was glad to donate land to help further the revitalization process in Judson.  We hope that the community garden will instill pride within Judson residents and that they will enjoy the literal fruits of their labor,” Pacolet MillikenPresidentRick Webel stated.

In addition, Pacolet Milliken said it is working with the Greenville County Recreation department on plans to lease 10 acres of former baseball fields in Judson for a future park, walking trail and green space.
