Horizon Project Foundation Selects Finalist for Master Developer

Two firms were named finalists in the search for a master developer for the Horizon Area Redevelopment Project, reports GSA Business.

The city of Charleston and the Horizon Project Foundation narrowed the field to Hughes Development Corp. of Greenville and Gateway Development Services Inc. of Atlanta. The two companies are competing to become the master developer for a 20-acre aggregation of connected parcels located in downtown Charleston. The city hopes to have the site developed as a research-oriented, innovative mixed-use urban infill development.

The site runs along the Ashley River and is adjacent to the Medical University of South Carolina. The Horizon Project Foundation is working in collaboration with the university and the city to conceptualize the goals for the overall space.

Currently, goals for the development include a life sciences research cluster and incubator facilities, MUSC clinical research centers, commercial mixed-use development, recreational facilities and residential units.

“The extraordinary response to the Horizon (request for proposals) affirms that Charleston is poised to take a leadership position in life science research and the development of the biosciences sector of our growing economy,” said Charleston Mayor Joe Riley.

Ray Greenberg, president of MUSC, called the district a live, work, earn and learn district that is an extension of MUSC.

“The Horizon Project will look and feel like Charleston, but it will be at the forefront of research environments,” he said. Read More.
