Construction employment declined by 4,000 jobs (-2.3 percent) in North Carolina while South Carolina added 2,700 jobs (3.5 percent) between April 2012 and April 2013. Some 29 states added jobs in the year-to-year period, according to the
Associated General Contractors of America review of Labor Department data.
In a month-to-month analysis, AGC said South Carolina added 700 jobs (0.9 percent) between March 2013 and April 2013. North Carolina added 500 construction jobs (0.3 percent) in the same period.
“The industry shows signs of recovering but employment growth continues to be uneven, with some areas seeing stronger gains even as others continue to contract,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “In addition, recent federal construction spending cuts amid still modest private sector growth is making it hard for the industry to recover in more areas.”
“While the industry ultimately needs broader private sector demand to truly recover, boosting infrastructure investments will certainly help,” said Stephen E.
