A joint venture between Balfour Beatty and McLean Contracting Company has been selected to replace aging bridges carrying Interstate 95 over Lake Marion, a major freight and travel corridor in the Southeast.
The project, awarded by the South Carolina Department of Transportation, calls for replacing the existing structurally deficient northbound and southbound bridge structures and their roadway approaches with new infrastructure designed to improve safety and traffic flow.
“This award supports both companies’ commitment to delivering critical infrastructure that supports regional growth and connectivity and is testament to our expertise in delivering complex design-build projects,” Balfour Beatty officials wrote on social media. “We look forward to enhancing these roadways for thousands of travelers each day.
“The work is intended to ensure the continued safe and efficient movement of people and goods along I-95, one of the East Coast’s primary north-south routes.”
Under the design-build contract, the team will construct a new six-lane mainline bridge and twin overflow bridges to enhance capacity and resilience along the corridor.
The award reflects the joint venture’s experience delivering complex infrastructure projects and supports regional growth and connectivity. The Lake Marion crossing serves thousands of motorists daily and is a critical link in South Carolina’s interstate network.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2030.
